Simple tutorials for Animation Nodes (Blender)

April 10, 2020

I got started learning Animation Nodes, which is node programming add-on for Blender. I searched around the internet for tutorials and found video tutorials that were good at teaching you how to make one particular effect but not how everything worked together. Following instructions is all well and good but if you don't understand what is happening or why something works then it's hard to use in your own projects.

The Animation Nodes documentation had the information I needed as well as example gifs for how to use a node in context. Documentation, if written well, can be a gold mine but hard to understand if one is not familiar with reading it (like if you're not a coder). So I've created some short, easy-to-navigate tutorials here using the AN documentation, some of which are revisions of out-of-date examples in the documentation. If you don't have Animation Nodes and would like to download it, the main page is found at this link: https://animation-nodes.com/

If you're familiar with Houdini, you've probably heard of the cgwiki maintained by Matt Estela at the following link: http://www.tokeru.com/cgwiki/index.php?title=Houdini. I've modeled the tutorials after the same style; short, conversational and easy to reference. Videos are great but annoying to scrub through. I won't show you how to make something polished but you will learn how to use the nodes for your own projects. Enjoy, and send me questions or comments if you're confused about something or if you've spotted a mistake or if you'd like to suggest any improvements. :)

Note: As of May 2020 some of the AN tutorials require Animation Nodes + Extra Nodes version of AN created by 3DSinghVFX. This page has the download links for builds of the Linux, Windows and MacOS versions of this add-on: https://blender.community/c/graphicall/tdbbbc/
